Avignon overview

Avignon Travel Guide
The walled city of Avignon owes its splendor to a time when the Popes uprooted from Rome bringing their vast wealth and desire for the magnificence to the south of France. Le Palais des Papes dominates the skyline and with its spires is testament to the fact that the town was once the centre of Christendom. The small cobbled streets and hidden away churches make Avignon the perfect place to explore on foot. Small cafes are the place to enjoy a coffee and soak up the history and there are also numerous excellent restaurants. Avignon is a place to relax, open a bottle of fine wine and kick back. There are also a number of bars, which open into the night and during the summer months the town transforms into a performing arts extravaganza.
